Press Release [Nov. 20, 2025]: The Romero Law Firm, P.A. Successfully Defends Client Charged with Murder and Trafficking Narcotics.
On November 20, 2025, a 12-member jury unanimously found Mr. Romero’s client not guilty of Murder and Trafficking Methamphetamine in the 4th Judicial District Court (San Miguel County District Court). The facts of the case were that there was a homicide in a rural part of Northern New Mexico with four (4) witnesses to the shooting. After the shooting, the police allegedly found narcotics and targeted the Defendant with possession of them. The Defenses presented in the case were Self-Defense and Defense of Others concerning the Murder Count, and insufficient evidence concerning the Trafficking Count.
During the trial, the State presented evidence and argument that the decedent was not in possession of a deadly weapon just prior to the shooting that occurred that resulted in the decedent’s death. The government further argued that the Defendant was confrontational and even mocked the decedent prior to the shooting. The defense admitted scientific evidence and pointed out key pieces of evidence that were not thoroughly tagged into evidence or considered by the State’s key witnesses, including previous threats from the alleged victim, his history of violence and mayhem and inconsistent statements by several witnesses and experts presented by the State.
The jury deliberated for just shy of two hours in reaching its decision, with one juror informing that, “after hearing the defense’s cross-examination of the State’s witnesses and looking at the physical evidence provided to us by attorney Romero, the Defendant’s version of events seemed much more accurate."
